Had breakfast today with a friend of mine who is a pastor in Canton – Gary Lamb. He’s a blast to be around. We’ve got a lot in common, even though we express our commonality in different ways.
One thing I said today was that I was going to stop using the Bible during all of our services. We talked about the Bible being good, but on occasion there is a need that the Bible doesn’t address. And besides, a lot of unchurched people could be lead towards God with an approach other the Bible. The Bible can actually be a barrier to reaching people. Hey, we're all about breaking down barriers.
So we both decided to use an approach in the future that leaves out the Bible. I think it will help us as we continue to remove barriers in our church towards reaching people.
If any of you know Gary, you know how stupid this idea sounds. And if you know me, you know that as well. How can any church not stand on the Bible? Even unchurched people know that a church uses the Bible. The problems come in HOW you use the Bible.
It's not a club to pound people over the head. It's not an ax to cut their hand off. It's not a gun to shoot their eye out. It reveals Christ. Period.
It was through reading the Bible that God grabbed me and shook my life. Without the Bible, we have no anchor for our faith. We give Bibles away in our services. We read from them EVERY Sunday, and that will never change.
I’m sure some people didn’t make it to the end of this post, and probably had a coronary after paragraph 2. They’ll spread rumors about us. Fine. ALWAYS read the entire post. You never know what happens at the end (smile).
Oh yeah, Gary and I didn't even talk about this. Why would we? It's something that will never change.
