My wife turned 40 last week. I had this great big surprise party planned. We never do parties for Debby or I, we just go out as a family. So this was from left field. But, as you know, her grandmother passed away and I had to punt.
Soooo, we had it last night. She was greatly surprised. My goal was to take her out to eat, and while we were gone my fellow deceivers would show up and partify the house. But, Debby wanted to get "take out" and eat on the back porch. Planning quickly turned to improvisation.
I did talk her into going with me to get take out. This gave the worker bees time to set up the party. Believe me when I say I took my time! I have never walked and driven so slow in my life. On the way back, I told her I needed to "get something for her" at Publix. That was true, I just wasn't sure what it was going to be. Fortunately, God sent some Stonecreekers to the Publix, and I was able to kill some time watching them unload their groceries in the parking lot. They must think I have too much time on my hands...
Then we made it home. The signal for the partiers was going to be the garage door opening. Guess what. It didn't close when I left because something was blocking the sensor! So, I had to pretend that something was wrong with it, opening and closing it several times.
In she went, "Surprise" they yelled, and surprised she was. It was awesome. I loved the curve balls. That's what made it interesting.
Ministry is the same dang way. We plan, and then God throws some curves, so we improv! It can make life stressful, but that is what faith is all about. We are truly chasing the wild goose!
